Child custody disputes and parenting plans

Child custody disputes are often highly emotional and very stressful for Georgia parents. While people may get swept up in the conflict of the moment, they need to remember that they will be connected to the other parent through their child, sometimes for years to come.

One way to help encourage a good co-parenting relationship for a child is through a well-drafted parenting plan that is prepared during the divorce process. Some people make the mistake of only relying on boilerplate language in form plans. Taking the time to thoroughly think through each different aspect and individualize the plan to fit their child and their situation can be much better in the long term.

When a plan is thorough, it can help minimize potential conflict by outlining how disputes will be handled in the future. This can help parents to get along better and keep them from needing to return to court. A plan can also be used to clearly outline the roles and responsibilities each parent will fulfill as they work together to raise their child into a well-adjusted and happy adult.

In a child custody dispute, the court will hold the best interests of the child far above the interests of either or both parents. It is important for people to step back from the emotionally charged nature of the situation and instead think about their child's interests. In some cases, a parent who is embroiled in on may want to get the help of a family law attorney to revisit the parenting plan and suggest ways that it can be tweaked in order to resolve the situation.
