Steps to take in a divorce

Georgia couples whose marriages are foundering should consider how their financial situation will be affected. With some divorces costing quite a bit of money, it is important to understand what is ahead. This means gathering financial information, photocopying documents and photographing all possessions to start. Next, a person should speak with an attorney. It should be an attorney who handles these types of matters instead of a friend whose work is in other areas of the law.

People should then think about what their priorities will be in the divorce. While the process should be done as efficiently as possible, a person should not rush through the divorce simply to get it over with. It is important to balance the need for financial security with the need for a reasonably quick resolution.

Families, friends and even strangers with whom a person strikes up a conversation might be able to offer insights on strategies that did and did not work for them and what their regrets were in a divorce. People should try to make logical decisions and not allow their emotions to overtake their decision-making.

The end of a marriage is a difficult time, and a person may be overwhelmed by all the tasks ahead. A divorcing spouse might want to have the assistance of an attorney in attempting to achieve a settlement outside of the courtroom first. This may be less expensive and time-consuming than litigation, and the client may be more satisfied with the agreement than with a decision made by a judge. If negotiations break down, then litigation is still an option.
