Cuba Gooding Jr. files for divorce after lengthy separation

On Jan. 20, actor Cuba Gooding Jr. filed for divorce from his wife of 20 years. The marriage had broken down a few years before due to irreconcilable differences, which is a cause for divorce in Georgia as well as in other states.

Gooding married his high school sweetheart in 1994. The couple had three children, two sons and one daughter. In 2014, his wife filed for a separation in a California court. She asked for joint legal and physical custody of their children at the time. In an interview in March 2016, Gooding hinted that he and his wife were working on potentially reconciling.

In the court documents, Gooding requested joint legal and physical custody of the couple's 10-year-old daughter. Both of their sons are adults. He also stated that he was willing to pay spousal support to his ex-wife. However, he also requested that his earnings since the date the separation was filed be considered his separate property.

Getting a divorce when there are children involved can be emotionally difficult. However, if the parents are willing to work together, a family law attorney may assist with drafting a parenting plan or child custody agreement that allows both parents to be involved in the child's life. For example, if one parent travels for work or consistently works away from the home for periods of time, the attorney may work out an agreement that allows the child to visit the traveling parent on a regular basis and in addition gives that parent specific holidays or other special days.
