Financial benefits of getting a divorce

The divorce process can be difficult for many estranged Georgia couples, especially when it comes to finances. In many cases, it can be expensive, causing people to walk away with fewer assets than they had when they were married. However, there are some financial benefits to getting a divorce.

A divorce can give individuals greater control over their money without having to try and control their former spouse's overspending. Those who have better spending habits may be able to recover some of the savings and other financial assets they may have given up or lost during the divorce. The divorce also provides an opportunity to set new financial priorities. For example, individuals who opted to sell the family home may decide to downsize in order to save more money. Making these financial decisions after a divorce can be beneficial, especially if the individuals are open to looking at their financial situation in a new way.

Another positive is that kids may have more access to student loans. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, for example, only asks for the custodial parent's information. Older divorcees may also be able to take advantage of certain Social Security perks.

Even if there are benefits to getting divorced, the actual process can still be emotionally difficult. If the divorce is amicable, some former couples may be interested in going through mediation or a collaborative divorce instead of litigating. In these cases, a family law attorney may still endeavor to protect a client's assets. The attorney may also determine if the client is entitled to alimony.
