Signs a couple may be headed for divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 9, 2019 | Family Law

Most couples who marry in Georgia do not predict that divorce is in their future. However, even good relationships can fall apart over time, and if the couple does not see the signs and take appropriate action, divorce may be the only option.

According to Good Housekeeping, there are certain statistics that may indicate a relationship will struggle more than others. There is a higher chance of divorce if either partner’s parents divorced, and an even higher chance if there was a remarriage. Another predictor of divorce is if the couple married at a young age or over the age of 32.

Money is also a factor. Living in debt increases the chance of divorce, as does when the woman earns more than the man. If the couple lived together or got pregnant before the wedding, there is a higher chance of divorce.

Abuse is obviously a reason to seek a divorce, but, according to PsychCentral, the signs of psychological abuse are much harder to identify than physical abuse. Emotional abuse often starts out subtly or may look like the partner is very caring and attentive when, in fact, it happens with the intent of controlling.

This abuse may take the form of gaslighting, manipulation or criticism. Some indications of psychological abuse include:

  • Exclusion by a partner
  • Humiliating comments
  • Withdrawal of affection as a punishment
  • Constantly making fun or putting down
  • Unwarranted jealousy
  • Using money, affection or love to control

While therapy and other tactics may help save some marriages, there is less of a chance when the relationship involves abuse.
