Take that headache seriously after a vehicle crash

On Behalf of | Feb 22, 2020 | Personal Injury

Perhaps, like many other Georgia drivers, you find yourself the victim of a low speed, rear-end collision.

You are more concerned about the damage to your trunk than you are about any physical issues, but your headache could signal a significant injury. Be sure that you pay attention to the signs your body sends that indicate that something may be amiss.

A seemingly minor injury

Headaches can warn of a concussion, a minor form of traumatic brain injury, or TBI. This is why you should seek prompt medical attention following a car crash, even one as seemingly trivial as a rear-end collision caused by a negligent driver traveling fewer than 5 mph. Doctors are finding that a concussion can cause long-term thinking and memory issues even if it stops short of resulting in more serious brain damage.

An injury with two forms

There are two types of TBI. The open form occurs when some kind of foreign object pierces the skull and enters the brain. The much more common closed form results from a blow to the head. For example, the impact of the rear-end collision may cause you to hit your head on the steering wheel.

A variety of symptoms

There are many symptoms of a TBI in addition to headaches:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Disorientation, confusion
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Problems with concentration or memory
  • Sleep pattern changes
  • Mood swings, anxiety or depression

A medical report

Your state of health is the first concern when seeking medical attention after a car crash, and the doctor you see will prepare a report that provides details. The medical report will also serve a second function: It will provide evidence that your injury is directly connected to the rear-end collision. Remember, you may have more than just a simple headache. Therefore, this information will be essential when the time comes for you to file a claim for insurance compensation to cover your medical expenses, any lost wages and more.
