Tips for gathering documentation after a car accident
Tips for gathering documentation after a car accident
posted: Sep. 14, 2020
When you drive somewhere, you put yourself at risk of getting into an injurious accident. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 3 million people in the U.S. sustain nonfatal injures in a car accident every year.
If you get injured in a collision, the resulting injuries can make it harder to go back to work, school and the other normal activities of your life. Gathering the right information after the crash can protect your best interests and enhance your chances of earning a fair settlement.
Information about the crash
Write down exactly where the crash occurred, the vehicles involved and what type of damages your car sustained. You should also write down your account of the accident while it is still fresh in your mind. If possible, take pictures of the scene of the collision to showcase exactly what happened.
Information about the other drivers
Get the name, phone number, license plate number and the insurance information of the other driver(s) involved in the car accident. If anyone else witnessed the crash, try to obtain their information to bolster your claim.
Information about your injuries
If you seek medical care at the hospital or at a physician’s office, write down what happened during your appointment. Obtain a copy of the doctor’s report for your personal records.
Even if you do not receive medical care right after the crash, write down how you feel every day. If you start to feel worse or hidden injuries manifest themselves, closely document your progression and if you need to see a doctor.
