What are the treatments for skull fractures?
If you were in an accident and face the possibility of a skull fracture, this is a serious injury and can result in severe consequences. When there is a chance of fracture, patients should see a physician as soon as possible.
Healthline explains the types of fractures and the treatment methods for skull fractures.
There are several types of skull fractures. Each fracture can occur because of a different type of impact. The types of fractures include open, closed, depressed and basal fractures. An open fracture or compound fracture is one where your skin breaks and you can see the bone. Closed fractures, on the other hand, do not include an open wound. If you have a depressed fracture, your skull becomes intended, whereas a basal fracture occurs on the skull’s floor, near the eyes, nose or spine.
Physicians do not treat skull fractures like other bone fractures. To treat the fracture, your doctor considers your age, health and the severity of the fracture. In basal skull fractures, you may only need pain medication and rest. However, in more serious cases, you may need surgery. Surgery becomes necessary when cerebrospinal fluid leaks from your nose or ears. If you have a depressed skull fracture, then you probably require surgery.
Depressed skull fractures may not heal on their own. If the surgeon does not correct your fracture, it could result in a brain injury later.
Skull fractures can heal in as little as six weeks. The severity of the fracture, other injuries and need for surgery may change your healing time.
